CONCORDIA STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN CENTENNIAL LECTURE
The first Centennial Scholars Research Lecture of the 2008-09 academic year, "Creating a Liberal Arts Math Course to Help Students Become Responsibly Engaged in the World," will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16 in Birkeland Alumni Lounge, Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.
The presenters are Dr. Jessie Lenarz, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science, Ellen Kramer ’09 and Samantha Briggs ’10. The trio investigated liberal arts math courses at peer institutions and developed curriculum for Math 105: Exploring Mathematics that reflects current trends in liberal arts mathematics as well as serving the mission of the college and the new curriculum. A modular approach has been implemented to allow for flexibility between semesters and instructors.
The lecture will feature a discussion of practical course topics such as consumer mathematics; current events, such as voting theory; and interesting mathematical ideas, such as symmetry and fractals. Complete course materials, including a text, solutions manual and in-class student activities have been developed and are currently being used this term.
The Centennial Scholars Program brings together faculty and students as co-inquirers on research projects.
